Description

"KARLOFF AS CAPTAIN HOOK" (2012) by Mark Redfield.
Acrylic on canvas. (18x24).

This cartoon of Peter Pan's arch-nemesis Captain Hook, as played by Boris Karloff, is suggested from the look and make-up Karloff used in the 1950 Broadway production, with Jean Arthur as Peter.

A delightful actor and a favorite villain!

Cleverly executed, with humor in spades, this is a most lively piece. The vivid colors of a red cloak and the royal blue dream-scape for a background heighten the drama. Karloff's face is boldly lined, while muted and layered colors suggest the mentioned application of stage makeup or, in Captain Hook's disadvantaged case, a certain 17th century vanity with ill-applied powders and rouge.

The large head, placed in the forefront, causes his image to fairly leap off of the canvas in almost a three-dimensional effect. At any moment we expect to be done in by that dreadful hook, as he forbids us entrance to his starry, watery domain. And, while it is a nighttime scene, there might be some evidence of a campfire, or lantern light which appears to be reflected off of the forehead, earrings, teeth, and hook.

Rumpled, jowly cheeks and chin make the Captain less frightening, and more of a delightful, if aging, rogue. Adding to this perception are the white highlights on the ringlets about his head, suggesting either star or moonlight beaming down on curly locks. He looks as if at any moment he might launch into a chorus, or recite something of a piratical nature to us. The eyes are definitely Karloff's--no one had eyes like his--and the pupils rest like rusty cannon balls upon the cotton wadding of the sclera. The expression in his eyes is both volatile and cunning--yet, those eyes might just be twinkling, too.
